As Mexico prepares to face England in the Round of 16 match this Sunday at the 2026 World Cup, ticket resale prices have skyrocketed to staggering levels. On resale platforms like StubHub, some tickets for the game at Estadio Ciudad de México are being offered for as much as 2.3 million pesos (approximately $120,000 USD), despite these seats being in the general stands—not VIP boxes or premium areas.
To put this in perspective, the highest resale prices for the World Cup final itself currently top out at around 1.7 million pesos on the same platform, making the Mexico-England match resale prices even more extreme. Meanwhile, the most affordable tickets on StubHub for this game start at 89,000 pesos for seats in the upper northern stands.
Another resale site, Viagogo, lists tickets ranging from 67,000 pesos in the highest sections to 195,000 pesos for seats near one of the goals. Since official FIFA tickets for this high-demand match are sold out, fans are left with resale as their only option.
This surge in resale prices is not new. Even during Mexico’s Round of 32 match against Ecuador, StubHub showed tickets priced at 186,000 pesos. The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO) had already issued warnings before the tournament about potential fraud risks in online ticket sales, especially on social media.
Unfortunately, the illegal ticket market has already caused harm. A group of fans in Manhattan filed a class-action lawsuit against StubHub, claiming they “did not receive what they paid for” as promised tickets were never delivered. They are seeking at least $5 million in damages for thousands of affected customers in the United States.
For Mexican fans abroad and immigrants in Mexico, this situation highlights the challenges of accessing major sporting events fairly and safely. While the excitement around the World Cup grows, so does the need for transparent, regulated ticketing systems that protect consumers and ensure everyone can enjoy the game without falling victim to scams or exorbitant prices.
