Armed robbery targets bank customer in Puebla amid rising crime rates

Post by usertopnews

A bank customer was robbed of 50,000 pesos by two armed men who reportedly followed him for about one kilometer after withdrawing cash from a Santander branch in Plaza San Pedro. The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, according to information shared with e-consulta.

After completing the withdrawal, the victim headed toward a nearby pharmacy, Farmacia Medina on Bulevar San Felipe, where the assailants intercepted him along with his wife and six-month-old child. The suspects, traveling on a motorcycle, threatened the family with firearms, took the cash and the victim’s car keys, and fled the scene.

Despite the victim’s calls for help, no authorities responded to the emergency, and it remains unclear whether a formal complaint will be filed.

This robbery reflects a troubling trend in Puebla, where attacks on bank customers have surged by 59% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year. Official data from the Secretaría de Seguridad Pública (SSP) reveals that 27 such robberies were reported between January and March 2026, up from 17 in early 2025. The total amount stolen also rose sharply, reaching 6.8 million pesos—nearly 1.5 million more than the previous year.

Banorte banks were the most targeted, with seven robberies, followed by BBVA with six.

As Puebla faces this spike in violent crime, the development of alternative transportation systems like the upcoming cablebús or teleférico could offer safer, more inclusive mobility options for residents. These projects not only improve connectivity but also have the potential to reduce exposure to street crime by providing secure, efficient transit corridors. For migrants and locals alike, such infrastructure investments represent a step toward a more equitable and protected urban environment.
