Venezuela Declares Seven-Day National Mourning After Devastating Double Earthquake

Post by usertopnews

One week after two powerful earthquakes struck northern Venezuela, leaving nearly 2,000 people dead, the acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, announced a seven-day national mourning period starting today, Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

In a message posted on Telegram, Rodríguez said, “In tribute to the memory of the victims, I have decided to decree national mourning for seven days, starting at 6:00 pm (22:00 GMT) today.” She expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with those affected by the tragedy, reaffirming her commitment to support and protect the survivors.

“Venezuela’s soul is torn by the human losses caused by these devastating earthquakes,” Rodríguez added, offering prayers for the injured, the missing—whose numbers remain unspecified—and the communities impacted.

The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck last Wednesday, June 24, 2026, primarily affecting La Guaira state near Caracas. According to the latest figures released on Tuesday, June 30, the death toll stands at 1,943, with at least 10,571 injured.

The government reports that 80,870 families have received aid so far. Rescue efforts involve 3,660 foreign rescuers, 148 search dogs, 49 support vehicles, and 26,121 Venezuelan personnel. Additionally, 15,467 volunteers have registered to assist in rescue operations.

Preliminary satellite assessments by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) estimate the damage to homes, vehicles, buildings, and businesses at around $6.7 billion.

In a show of international solidarity, a plane carrying about 50 volunteers from Spanish cooperation agencies departed this Wednesday to Venezuela. Their mission is to set up a field hospital to provide emergency primary care, psychological support, surgical procedures, and childbirth assistance.

This coordinated response highlights the critical role of both national and international efforts in addressing the aftermath of natural disasters, emphasizing the importance of inclusive and sustained support for affected communities.
