Six Dead in Guanajuato After Consuming Adulterated Tequila

Post by usertopnews

In a tragic series of events that began on June 8, six people have died in Guanajuato after consuming adulterated tequila. The initial cases of poisoning were reported in Salamanca, where all affected individuals had attended a quinceañera celebration two days earlier.

The Guanajuato Health Secretariat confirmed the deaths of two people, while the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) reported a third fatality. A fourth victim died at home, and additional deaths followed, including the father of the quinceañera.

Weeks later, over the weekend, a 52-year-old man named José Luis also died after drinking the same adulterated tequila, although he had not attended the quinceañera. Investigations revealed he had purchased the bottle in Irapuato days before his death.

The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Guanajuato launched an investigation into the mass poisoning. Laboratory tests confirmed the tequila contained dangerously high levels of methanol, a toxic substance often found in counterfeit alcohol.

Governor Libia García shared with the media that authorities have identified the source of the adulterated tequila but withheld further details. Meanwhile, State Attorney Gerardo Vázquez confirmed that several suspects have been arrested. “There are detainees, but I will not provide more information. The case is progressing firmly, but I won’t announce how much we have done,” he told reporters.

This case highlights ongoing challenges in regulating alcohol production and distribution, underscoring the importance of state intervention to protect public health and safety. For communities in Guanajuato and beyond, it serves as a stark reminder to remain vigilant about the origins of alcoholic beverages.
