Mexican Morena Officials Reportedly Sharing Information with U.S. Authorities, Raising Diplomatic Tensions

A recent investigation by The New York Times, in collaboration with Puente News, reveals that several Mexican officials and legislators, mainly linked to the Morena party, have initiated confidential communications with U.S. authorities. These contacts aim to provide information related to investigations led by the Trump administration into alleged ties between public servants and organized crime.

According to the report by journalists Steve Fisher, Jack Nicas, and Alan Feuer, at least a dozen officials—including governors and lawmakers—have sought to establish these lines of communication, with some already engaged in private conversations. Many appear motivated by a desire to anticipate potential investigations against them.

These interactions reportedly began after the U.S. Department of Justice, at the end of April, charged 10 current and former officials from Sinaloa, including then-Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, with alleged collaboration with the Sinaloa Cartel. The DEA also reportedly initiated a private effort to persuade Mexican officials to cooperate with ongoing investigations.

The U.S. investigations are further supported by information from detained Sinaloa Cartel members in the United States and from some of the 92 suspected drug traffickers extradited from Mexico to the U.S. over the past 18 months, several of whom have started cooperating with federal prosecutors.

These developments have intensified diplomatic friction between Mexico and the United States. Since the accusations became public, Mexico City’s Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum has repeatedly dismissed the allegations. In her morning press conferences, she has emphasized that any inquiry must respect national sovereignty and follow established bilateral cooperation mechanisms.

For Mexican migrants and immigrants in the U.S., this story highlights the complex interplay between cross-border law enforcement and political dynamics, underscoring the importance of transparent and respectful collaboration between the two nations.
