On Sunday, June 28, 2026, Puebla experienced heavy rainfall that caused flooding and waterlogging in various parts of the city. However, the amount of rain was far from breaking the city’s historic precipitation record, according to Agua de Puebla para Todos, the local water management concessionaire.

The company reported that nearly 65 millimeters of rain fell during the day—equivalent to 65 liters of water per square meter. This figure is less than one-third of Puebla’s record rainfall of 228.3 millimeters, which was set during storms on September 5 and June 2, 2003.

Despite the lower rainfall compared to historic levels, the flooding experienced over the weekend highlighted ongoing challenges with urban drainage systems. Agua de Puebla para Todos emphasized the role of everyday habits in worsening flood impacts, urging residents to avoid littering.

“Not throwing garbage prevents the collapse of drainage systems,” the concessionaire stated, reminding the public that many blockages in the city’s stormwater network stem from solid waste clogging drains, grates, and collectors.

Experts in hydraulic infrastructure agree that while extraordinary rains can overwhelm drainage capacity, the accumulation of trash is a key factor that accelerates waterlogging and prolongs flooding in urban areas.

Authorities continue to call on citizens to refrain from discarding waste in public spaces, especially during the rainy season, when even a single bottle, bag, or container can trigger blockages that affect dozens of homes and drivers.
