Sheinbaum Rules Out New Public Role for Ex-Pemex Director Accused of Domestic Violence

On Monday, June 29, 2026, Mexico City’s President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the controversy surrounding Víctor Rodríguez Padilla, the former director of Pemex, who has been accused of domestic violence by his wife.

During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum clarified that she has not yet spoken directly with Rodríguez Padilla’s spouse, but that communication is ongoing through the Secretariat of Women. She emphasized the importance of respecting legal processes and ensuring justice for victims of violence.

Regarding Rodríguez Padilla’s recent appointment to the National Institute of Electricity and Clean Energies (INEEL), Sheinbaum explained that the nomination was not yet official. “He had announced his entry at the institute, but I had not signed the appointment document yet,” she said. She stressed that the formal signing was still pending and that no official transfer of the position had taken place.

When asked if Rodríguez Padilla might be considered for any other public office, Sheinbaum was unequivocal: “No, none. No, no, no.”

She also highlighted that the Morelos Attorney General’s Office is responsible for investigating the case and insisted on the strict application of the law. “There can be no tolerance for violence against women. This is not about personal connections; the law must be applied, and the Morelos prosecutor’s office will determine the appropriate criminal sanction,” she stated.

This firm stance comes amid ongoing national conversations about gender-based violence and the role of public officials in setting examples of accountability. For many, it underscores the need for transparent governance and the protection of women’s rights in Mexico.
