Puebla’s Cablebús: A More Cost-Effective Urban Cable Car Compared to Paris

Post by usertopnews

The Puebla Cablebús project continues to draw international comparisons, highlighting its potential as a transformative urban transport system. This week, it was revealed that Paris’s new urban cable car, Cable 1 (C-1), required an investment of 138 million euros—nearly 3 billion Mexican pesos at the current exchange rate. The French system spans 4.5 kilometers, costing about 667 million pesos per kilometer.

In contrast, Puebla’s Cablebús will cover a much longer route of 14.58 kilometers with an estimated investment of approximately 6.75 billion pesos, according to the State Government. This breaks down to roughly 463 million pesos per kilometer—about 30% less expensive than the Parisian system.

While the total cost of Puebla’s project is higher in absolute terms, the per-kilometer cost efficiency is notable. Beyond numbers, the scale of the project is ambitious: the Paris C-1 connects four municipalities in the metropolitan area, whereas Puebla’s Cablebús aims to become the world’s longest urban cable car, expected to transport up to 90,000 passengers daily between the city’s south and north.

Of course, cost alone doesn’t guarantee success. The real impact will depend on whether the Cablebús can effectively move thousands of residents every day, reduce travel times, and reshape urban mobility in Puebla. Still, the fact that public funds are being used more efficiently is a promising sign for the city’s future transit landscape.
