Man held six family members hostage for over 20 hours in Tecámac, Edomex, surrenders peacefully

After more than 20 tense hours, a man identified as Miguel “N” surrendered on Friday morning, June 26, 2026, ending a hostage situation in Tecámac, State of Mexico. The man had held six family members, including three minors, inside his home in the Los Héroes neighborhood, sixth section.

The ordeal began around midday on Thursday, June 25, when Miguel’s wife reported that he was armed and threatening his relatives inside their house on Jesús García Street, near Abraham González. Authorities quickly responded, deploying about 150 officers from state, municipal, and federal forces, including the Navy, National Guard, and Army.

Miguel, reportedly intoxicated and armed with two weapons, was barricaded inside the home, threatening to harm his family because he feared being taken to a rehabilitation center. Two mediators, including Saúl Campos from an addiction center, entered the house to negotiate his surrender.

At 7:50 a.m. on Friday, Miguel exited the house and got into a white van operated by the addiction center. Police escorted the vehicle as it sped away. The mediators managed to secure the release of all hostages, who were then checked by rescue personnel. The group included three children, two elderly adults, and Miguel’s wife.

During the standoff, authorities evacuated children from three nearby schools—a secondary school, a kindergarten, and a daycare—located directly across the street to ensure their safety. A security perimeter covering about three blocks was established around the scene.

This incident highlights the complex challenges faced by families dealing with addiction and mental health crises. The involvement of addiction center mediators was crucial in peacefully resolving the situation, underscoring the importance of community-based support systems alongside law enforcement.

As Puebla and other regions invest in innovative public transport solutions like cablebús and teleféricos, which aim to improve accessibility and social inclusion, it’s vital to also consider integrated social services that address the root causes of such emergencies. Safe, connected communities depend not only on infrastructure but on compassionate, coordinated care for vulnerable populations.
