Nurse Allegedly Involved in Medication Theft Executed in Culiacán: A Closer Look at the Case

Post by usertopnews

On Wednesday afternoon, June 24, 2026, Abel Elías, a 35-year-old nurse from the IMSS hospital in Culiacán, was fatally shot in the Antonio Rosales neighborhood. His death has raised questions due to a suspicious coincidence: just five days earlier, on Friday, June 19, Abel had been detained for allegedly stealing medication from the hospital where he worked.

The shooting occurred around 2:50 p.m. on Avenida Río Petatlán, between Tepuche and Francisco Zarco streets. Authorities responded to a 911 emergency call reporting a man in a white nurse’s uniform who had been shot multiple times. Abel was officially identified by his family following the incident.

The nurse’s arrest on June 19 took place at 3 p.m. at the hospital’s time clock. He was accused of attempting to take four boxes of tenecteplase, a critical thrombolytic drug used in emergency treatments for heart attacks, strokes, and pulmonary embolisms. Each box of tenecteplase is valued at approximately 120,000 pesos, highlighting the high stakes involved in medication security at the IMSS Clinic No. 1 in Culiacán.

Despite the arrest, Abel was released and continued his legal process in freedom—a fact that was not publicly known until his death. In recent days, the clinic had intensified security measures, including operational checkpoints to prevent medication theft, which led to the discovery of Abel’s alleged attempt to leave with the drug.

This tragic event underscores the complex challenges faced by healthcare institutions in safeguarding vital medicines while supporting their staff. It also raises broader questions about the pressures on healthcare workers and the urgent need for transparent, fair processes that protect both patients and employees.

For migrants and diverse communities navigating healthcare systems, stories like Abel’s highlight the importance of systemic reforms that ensure access to essential medicines without compromising the dignity and rights of those who serve on the front lines.
