Burned Body Found Near Periférico Linked to Market Morelos Gang Conflict, Puebla Security Chief Says

On June 22, authorities discovered a burned body inside a vehicle near the entrance to Parque Centenario Laguna de Chapulco, close to the Periférico Ecológico access from Prolongación 14 Sur in Puebla. The Secretary of Public Security (SSP), Vice Admiral Francisco Sánchez González, revealed that this grim finding is likely connected to an ongoing turf war over control of the Market Morelos area.

The victim remains unidentified due to the severe condition of the remains, which were completely burned. The identification process has been delayed because the body was dismembered before being set on fire, initially leading investigators to believe there were two victims instead of one.

Sánchez González explained in an interview with Cinco Radio that the investigation points to a violent dispute involving drug retail operations and extortion within Market Morelos. This conflict has already resulted in multiple violent incidents, including attacks that left three people dead and ten injured earlier this June.

The security chief named two criminal groups involved: La Familia Michoacana, a nationally operating cartel, and Los Toscano, a local faction. In February, coordinated operations by the SSP led to the arrest of 25 individuals linked to the national cartel cell.

The violence has also impacted local services. The Centro de Salud Urbano México 68, located near Market Morelos, suspended its operations due to the unrest. Despite this, 47 staff members—including doctors, assistants, nurses, and cleaning personnel—have protested the closure, highlighting the community’s struggle amid ongoing insecurity.

This situation underscores the urgent need for effective public safety measures and social policies that protect vulnerable communities in Puebla. As the city plans to expand sustainable transport options like the cablebús, which promises better connectivity and safer mobility, addressing the root causes of violence remains critical for inclusive urban development.
