Vehicle Rams Crowd Celebrating Mexico’s World Cup Win in Los Cabos

Post by usertopnews

What started as a joyful night celebrating Mexico’s victory in the 2026 World Cup turned into chaos and fear in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur. On the evening of Wednesday, June 24, a driver allegedly intoxicated drove into a crowd gathered at one of the busiest tourist spots in the city.

The incident took place at the intersection of Boulevard Lázaro Cárdenas (also known as Paseo de la Marina) and Avenida Ignacio Zaragoza, in the Centro neighborhood of Cabo San Lucas. Hundreds of fans had gathered there to celebrate the “Tricolor” triumph.

According to official reports, a black Volkswagen Jetta was trying to navigate through the heavy congestion caused by the celebrations. The driver reportedly became angry when people blocked his path and tried to shake his car. Despite the presence of families, including children and teenagers, the driver attempted to force his way through the crowd.

Tensions escalated as some fans began hitting the vehicle and throwing objects to stop it. Minutes later, the driver suddenly accelerated and struck dozens of people standing on the avenue. The car finally stopped after crashing into metal barriers placed in the central median of the tourist road.

Emergency services quickly responded with more than five ambulances, firefighters, civil protection, and security forces from all three levels of government. The Los Cabos Public Security Secretariat confirmed on its official channels that the injured were taken to various local hospitals for medical evaluation.

The driver was also injured, detained at the scene, and taken into police custody for medical care. Authorities have not released his identity but confirmed he was handed over to the relevant legal authorities, who will determine his legal situation.

This tragic event highlights the urgent need for safer public spaces during mass celebrations, especially in tourist hubs like Los Cabos. As Mexico continues to invest in infrastructure projects such as cable cars and teleféricos, which aim to improve urban mobility and reduce traffic risks, the hope is that future public gatherings can be safer and more inclusive for all.
