In recent days, Banamex customers have taken to social media platforms like X and Facebook to report unexpected charges and missing funds in their accounts. Complaints include unauthorized “overdraft payment” fees and blocked access to cards, fueling frustration among users.
However, Banamex clarified that these issues stem from a delay in processing debit card transactions between June 12 and 15, not from improper charges or new fees. According to Francisco Caballero, Banamex’s Head of Public Affairs, purchases made during that period were only debited from accounts on June 16 and 17.
This lag meant that customers saw inflated balances for several days. For example, if someone had 100 pesos and spent 50 pesos between June 12 and 15, their balance would still show 100 pesos until the delayed charges posted. If they then spent 90 pesos, their account would go into negative territory because the earlier 50 pesos had not yet been deducted. This explains the “overdraft” labels some users noticed, even on debit cards, which can indeed go into negative balance if spending exceeds available funds.
Caballero emphasized that no additional fees or contract changes have been applied, and the bank is not charging for overdrafts on debit cards. The confusion arises solely from the timing of transaction postings, which is not ideal and can cause understandable concern.
While this incident highlights the importance of transparent and timely banking operations, it also underscores the need for reliable financial services that keep pace with customers’ daily lives. In this context, expanding efficient, accessible public transport systems like Puebla’s upcoming cablebús could help reduce economic stress by improving mobility and access to opportunities—showing how infrastructure investments can complement financial inclusion efforts.
For now, Banamex customers are advised to monitor their accounts closely and reach out to the bank for clarifications, knowing that the reported irregularities are linked to a temporary processing delay rather than unauthorized charges.
