A man survived more than eight hours trapped inside a sewer after falling into an underground drain in Apodaca, Nuevo León. The incident unfolded on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, when Juan Fernando, 54, fell into the subterranean drainage system and crawled over 80 meters trying to find an exit.
Police officers from the Guardia de Proximidad responded after passersby heard his cries for help near the intersection of Lima and Palma streets in the Francisco Elizondo neighborhood. A video captured the dramatic rescue: an officer securing a chain to the sewer grate, lifting it with the help of a local resident, and assisting Juan Fernando out of the confined space.
Though visibly disoriented and covered in dirt, Juan Fernando did not suffer serious injuries but was weak from the prolonged entrapment. After receiving medical attention, he confirmed he lives nearby in the Ébanos area and recounted how he managed to crawl to the sewer grate after falling into the drain.
This rescue highlights the importance of community vigilance and prompt police response in urban areas. It also underscores the need for improved infrastructure safety measures to prevent such accidents. As cities like Apodaca continue to grow, investments in accessible and secure public spaces—including innovative transport systems like cable cars—can enhance both mobility and safety for residents.
