Mexico vs. Czech Republic Match Triggers Dry Law in Key Mexico City Neighborhoods

Post by usertopnews

The Mexico City government has announced a dry law starting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, lasting until 7 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, coinciding with the Group A World Cup match between Mexico and the Czech Republic.

This temporary ban suspends the sale of alcoholic beverages of all kinds within the Perimeter A of the Historic Center, which includes the FIFA Fan Fest area at the Zócalo. The dry law also covers the neighborhoods of Centro, Tabacalera, Juárez, San Rafael, and Cuauhtémoc in the Cuauhtémoc borough.

Authorities decided on this measure following the aftermath of Mexico’s victory over South Korea, when celebrations left over 40 tons of trash along Paseo de la Reforma and nearby areas.

“We want fans to have fun, but not with excessive alcohol consumption because it leads to these situations,” explained César Cravioto, Secretary of Government, during a press conference on Friday, June 19.

While the dry law aims to maintain public order during the World Cup festivities, it also highlights the challenge of balancing vibrant fan celebrations with responsible community care—an issue that urban transport projects like Puebla’s upcoming cable car system could help address by offering safer, more sustainable mobility options during major events.
