A leaked audio clip from the third weekend of June 2026 reveals Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda discussing plans to meet with U.S. officials at the American consulate in Tijuana. This comes nearly a year after her tourist visa was canceled, alongside that of her husband, Carlos Torres Torres.
Back in May 2025, the U.S. government revoked Torres Torres’s visa, and shortly after, Governor Ávila Olmeda confirmed she had also been notified of her visa cancellation. The recent audio highlights her willingness to engage with U.S. agencies to clarify and resolve any outstanding issues.
“I’m calm. I’ve met with the agencies that have reached out to me, and I’m fully open to dialogue,” she says in the recording. During a conversation involving translation between English and Spanish, the governor emphasizes her preference to handle legal matters through her attorney.
Her legal representative, based in Miami, Florida, was specifically chosen to maintain confidentiality and avoid leaks in Baja California. According to Ávila Olmeda, the lawyer visits the state about once a month as needed.
This development underscores the complex relationship between Mexican state officials and U.S. authorities, especially in border regions where cooperation and diplomacy are crucial. For residents and migrants navigating these cross-border dynamics, transparency and legal clarity remain essential.
