In April 2026, Puebla’s Red Urbana de Transporte Articulado (RUTA) experienced a notable 11.1% increase in passengers compared to the same month in 2025, according to the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (Inegi). This growth highlights the system’s expanding role in the city’s urban mobility landscape.
During April, RUTA transported 8,838,694 passengers, with 8,620,175 paying full fare and 218,519 traveling courtesy of free rides. The system operated four main trunk routes supported by 352 buses on weekdays and 270 on weekends, covering a total of 2,544,811 kilometers—a modest 0.6% increase from the previous year.
This data places Puebla fifth nationally in terms of distance covered by urban transport systems, reflecting a stronger rise in passenger demand than in operational capacity. Nationally, structured urban transport systems moved 244.1 million users in April 2026, with Puebla’s RUTA ranking fifth in ridership behind Mexico City’s metropolitan area (179.2 million), Guadalajara (26.8 million), León (13.7 million), and Monterrey.
For migrants and young urban dwellers navigating Puebla, RUTA’s growth signals a positive shift toward more accessible and efficient public transit options. The system’s steady expansion supports inclusive mobility, reducing reliance on private vehicles and contributing to a more sustainable city. As Puebla continues to invest in transit infrastructure, including upcoming projects like the cablebús, these developments promise to enhance connectivity and quality of life for diverse communities across the region.
