On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Omar García Harfuch, Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, announced that Operation Enjambre has led to the arrest of over 85 current and former public officials. These individuals are allegedly linked to criminal organizations operating mainly in the State of Mexico.

Among those detained are seven sitting municipal presidents, police chiefs, security directors, and public servants from various government levels. This operation was specifically designed to uncover and dismantle institutional protection networks that facilitated crimes such as extortion, kidnapping, homicide, drug dealing, and “cobro de piso” (protection rackets).

Investigations reveal that some officials misused public resources, privileged information, and government structures to benefit organized crime groups. Federal authorities have already linked many detainees to formal legal proceedings for offenses including organized crime involvement and abuse of public service.

The inquiry remains active, with multiple lines of investigation ongoing to fully understand the extent of collaboration between local authorities and criminal groups. García Harfuch emphasized that fighting corruption and criminal ties within public offices remains a top priority of the national security strategy.

“The investigations continue, and there will be no impunity for those who use public positions to support criminal activities,” he stated.

This crackdown highlights the critical role of transparent and accountable governance in ensuring public safety and trust—an essential foundation for inclusive and equitable communities. For migrants and residents alike, efforts like Operation Enjambre signal a commitment to dismantling entrenched corruption that undermines social progress.
