Just a month after Ariadna Montiel took charge of Morena’s national leadership with a strict “zero tolerance for frivolity” mandate, the party has sanctioned two of its members for ostentatious behavior.

The National Commission of Honesty and Justice (CNHJ) opened case CNHJQROO-350/2026 against Eliazar Mas Kinil, the third councilor of Tulum, after a video surfaced on social media showing him aboard a private jet wearing luxury clothing. The 23-page sanctioning process concluded that his conduct went beyond personal travel or activities, highlighting a clear contradiction with Morena’s principles of austerity and the fight against privileges associated with power.

Supporting evidence includes 22 news articles, videos, and photos documenting the councilor’s trips abroad and luxury lifestyle. The CNHJ ordered Mas Kinil to refrain from promoting or publicly displaying behaviors that conflict with Morena’s core values and ethical guidelines.

Adding to this, the mayor of Chignahuapan, Puebla, Juan Rivera Trejo, was sanctioned for hosting a lavish quinceañera party for his daughter on May 9, 2026. The CNHJ initiated case CNHJ-PUE-236/2026 and imposed a precautionary measure preventing him from organizing or showcasing ostentatious public or private events while the investigation proceeds. This includes a ban on using digital platforms and social media to display conduct contrary to Morena’s principles of republican austerity and service vocation.

Commissioners found sufficient evidence to preliminarily consider these actions as serious violations against the party’s statutory and ideological principles, damaging Morena’s image. Publicly available information and social media posts will be analyzed further in the ongoing process.

These sanctions reflect Morena’s renewed commitment to austerity and ethical conduct, reinforcing the party’s stance against privilege and excess within its ranks.
