Puebla embraces the World Cup in the Zócalo despite high costs

Post by usertopnews

On Thursday, June 11, 2026, hundreds of Puebla residents gathered in the Zócalo of the city to watch the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the specially installed Fan Zone. This public viewing area features a giant screen, sound systems, recreational activities, and social spaces designed to make Puebla’s historic center the main hub for soccer fans during the 39-day tournament.

While the festive atmosphere brings the community together, the event also highlights the significant expenses involved in legally broadcasting the World Cup in public spaces. Although Puebla’s government and city hall have not disclosed the exact cost of the Fan Zone, they acknowledged that the broadcasting rights alone cost “several million pesos.” This financial reality led to the decision not to extend similar setups to other municipalities or locations within the city.

The situation contrasts sharply with that of neighboring Tlaxcala, where just days before, authorities canceled plans to install giant screens for the World Cup. According to Antonio Martínez Velázquez, Tlaxcala’s Social Communication Coordinator, the broadcasting rights alone were estimated at around 40 million pesos, with total costs—including screens, tents, audio, security, and logistics—approaching 60 million pesos. The state government, led by Governor Lorena Cuéllar, deemed such spending unjustifiable given other pressing public needs and redirected funds toward infrastructure and public works instead.

Puebla’s choice to invest in a public viewing experience reflects a commitment to community engagement and cultural celebration, even amid debates across Mexico about the role of public funds in large-scale entertainment events. The free access to the Fan Zone invites families, tourists, and fans dressed in Mexico’s colors to share in the excitement of the first World Cup jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

For many, this initiative is more than just watching soccer; it’s about creating inclusive public spaces that foster social connection and pride. While the costs are high, Puebla’s approach shows how strategic investment in public events can enrich urban life and bring people together in meaningful ways.
