On Thursday, June 11, 2026, Luis Ángel López Valdez, a journalist covering police news in Poza Rica, Veracruz, was fatally shot by armed assailants while walking along Avenida 20 de Noviembre in the Cazones neighborhood. López Valdez worked for the local media outlet Vanguardia and also served as a subdelegate for Cruz Ámbar in the region.
According to the Veracruz State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), the attackers fled the scene without any arrests, and authorities have already begun an investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the murder. The FGE confirmed that forensic teams and police investigators processed the crime scene promptly, emphasizing that impunity will not be tolerated.
This tragic event marks the second journalist killing in Poza Rica this year, following the murder of Carlos Castro on January 8. López Valdez’s work focused on reporting insecurity and violence in northern Veracruz, a region where journalists face significant risks.
The murder comes just over a week after the disappearance of another Veracruz journalist, Roxana Guzmán, who was abducted from her home in Nanchital, in the southern part of the state. Nine days after her disappearance, there is still no public information about her whereabouts or progress in the investigation.
Governor Rocío Nahle García has stated that multiple lines of inquiry are underway but has declined to share details or updates. Social media reports have mentioned the detention of several suspects linked to Guzmán’s case, but authorities have neither confirmed nor denied these claims.
For the migrant and immigrant communities who rely on trustworthy news and advocate for human rights and justice, these events highlight the urgent need for stronger protections for journalists and transparent investigations. Veracruz’s ongoing violence against the press underscores the broader challenges faced by those who dare to report on insecurity and corruption in Mexico.
